5. God the Holy Spirit
God the Holy Spirit is eternal,[1] was active in the creation of the world,[2] and inspired the Old and New Testament Scriptures.[3] He is present throughout the Old Testament providing wisdom, revelation, and victory for the leaders, prophets, and kings of Israel.[4] In the New Testament, The Holy Spirit anointed[5] and directed Jesus’ ministry [6] and raised Him from the dead.[7] He guided[8] and empowered the Apostles with miraculous signs to authenticate their teaching.[9] He enabled the early church to speak in different languages in order to spread the gospel.[10] Today, He provides spiritual gifts[11] and guarantees eternal life to every believer. [12] He convicts the unbelieving world of their sin, their need to receive Jesus’ perfect righteousness, and warns of God’s coming judgment.[13] He also draws,[14] illuminates,[15] and enables sinners towards repentance and faith prior to salvation.[16] The Holy Spirit is God’s seal[17] who marks those belonging to Him as children of God the moment they repent and in faith trust Jesus to be their personal Savior and Lord.[18] The Holy Spirit permanently indwells, [19] and transforms[20] every believer to be spiritually born again[21] as a new creation living for the Lord. [22] He empowers every believer[23] to no longer be slaves to sin, [24] but slaves of righteous[25] growing in knowledge,[26] obedience,[27] and conformity to Christ.[28] He enables every believer to live a life increasingly characterized by holiness,[29] righteousness,[30] and the fruits of the Spirit.[31] The Holy Spirit produces assurance of salvation[32] to every true believer and provides perseverance to remain faithful to Christ.[33]
